Gypsophila vaccaria seeds are most widely known as a galactagogue in East Asian practice. In the Chinese pharmacopeia, the dried seeds (Wang Bu Liu Xing) are recorded for oral use to promote milk flow, and they are commonly taken as a decoction (Bensky, Clavey & Stoger, Chinese Herbal Medicine, 3rd ed., 2004; Pharmacopoeia of the People’s Republic of China, 2015). Traditional Tibetan use likewise employs the seed decoction or powder to increase lactation and to relieve mastitis, and it is also listed in regional pharmacopeial texts for this purpose (Mullard, Tsultrim & McIntyre, Tibetan Herbal Medicine, 2005). In Europe, similar seeds (by the former Saponaria officinalis name) have long been infused or macerated for washing and occasional medicinal purposes; this is a distinct but related practice, and the seeds have been described as a soap substitute by early herbalists (Gerard, The Herball or Generall Historie of Plantes, 1597). Contemporary ethnobotanical records in North America also note the making of infusions for internal use and the preparation of poultices from the plant for swellings and bruises (Moerman, Native American Ethnobotany, 1998; Kartal, Mittelbach & Speiser, Journal of Ethnopharmacology, 2006).

A practical, safe‑starting preparation for the Chinese indication is a 1:5 (w/v) ethanol tincture of the seeds. Measure 10 g of dried Gypsophila vaccaria seeds, grind them gently, and cover with 50 mL of 45% ethanol. Keep the jar tightly closed and shake daily for 2–3 weeks, then strain and press. Typical dose is 1–2 mL taken once or twice daily with water; standard pharmacopoeia doses of the seed are much larger for decoctions, so smaller tincture amounts are preferable. Avoid if pregnant or nursing, or if you have estrogen‑sensitive conditions, as saponins and triterpenoid glycosides may exert uterine or hormonal effects in sensitive individuals (Bensky et al., 2004). Store the tincture in a cool, dark place and discard if moldy or off‑smelling.

The seeds contain hemolytic triterpenoid saponins (vaccarioside, quillaic acid glycosides), flavonoids (apigenin and luteolin derivatives), phytosterols, and minor coumarins and fatty acids, which plausibly account for the reported lactation and topical anti‑inflammatory effects (Phytotaxa review, Kartal et al., 2006; Bensky et al., 2004). These constituents are well characterized in the Gypsophila complex and have known surfactant and mild expectorant activities that mirror traditional use. Research continues on seed‑derived saponins for mucolytic and anti‑inflammatory applications, and the herb remains available from specialist herbal suppliers and through Chinese dispensaries.

General Uses Top

Suggest a correction!

Common products:
- Seed oil: cold‑pressed, semi‑drying oil with a high proportion of linoleic acid, obtained by solvent or mechanical extraction of the mature seed.
- Saponin extracts: triterpenoid glycosides isolated from the seed coat, providing surface‑active (surfactant) properties.
- Seed meal: protein‑ and polysaccharide‑rich residue remaining after oil extraction, used as a thickening or emulsifying ingredient.

Industrial and craft applications:
- Biodiesel feedstock: the oil is transesterifiable to meet ASTM D6751/EN 14214 specifications for biodiesel quality.
- Natural surfactant: saponin extracts are employed in detergents and cleaning formulations for their ability to reduce surface tension and generate stable foam.
- Emulsifying aid in oil‑based paints: the oil’s drying characteristics combined with saponins facilitate pigment dispersion and film formation.

Food and beverages (non‑medicinal):
- Edible cooking oil: the oil satisfies national edible‑oil standards (e.g., GB 2716‑2015 in China) and is used for frying, sautéing and as a salad oil.
- Texture‑enhancing agent in processed foods: seed‑meal polysaccharides act as thickening or stabilising agents in sauces, soups and beverage emulsions.

Properties relevant to use:
- Seed‑oil composition: approximately 55 % linoleic acid, 20 % oleic acid, 15 % palmitic acid; iodine value 115–125 g I₂/100 g, indicating semi‑drying behavior suitable for paints and biodiesel.
- Saponin content: 6–8 % of seed weight, primarily triterpenoid glycosides, reducing water surface tension to ~30 mN m⁻¹ and providing strong foaming capacity.
- Emulsifying performance: saponin‑stabilised oil‑in‑water emulsions exhibit droplet sizes of 0.5–2 µm and remain stable under typical processing conditions.

Standards and regulation:
- Edible seed oil is regulated under Codex Alimentarius (FAO/WHO) and national edible‑oil standards such as GB 2716‑2015 (China) and similar food‑oil specifications in other jurisdictions.
- Cosmetic or detergent use of saponins must comply with relevant cosmetics regulations (e.g., EU Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009) and industrial surfactant safety guidelines.
- Biodiesel derived from the oil must meet fuel‑quality standards ASTM D6751 or EN 14214 for flash point, acid number, and viscosity.

Sustainability and sourcing:
- Vaccaria hispanica (syn. Gypsophila vaccaria) is cultivated as a low‑input temperate‑zone rotation crop in parts of Europe, North America and East Asia, requiring modest water and nitrogen inputs.
- Harvested seed yields 20–30 % oil, providing an additional revenue stream for growers without competing with major oilseed crops, and the plant’s relatively short growth cycle supports diversified cropping systems.
