Crateva religiosa, also known as the sacred garlic pear or temple plant, is a flowering tree belonging to the capers family. It is native to tropical Asia and some South Pacific islands, but is also grown in other parts of the world for its fruit. The tree can reach up to 15 meters in height and its flowers, which have long stamens resembling spiders, attract various insects and birds. The bark of this tree contains a chemical compound called lupeol, which can be extracted for medicinal purposes. The garlic pear tree is also a favorite of the Hebomoia glaucippe butterfly.
