Capparis masaikai, commonly known as mabinlang, is a plant native to the subtropical region of Yunnan province in China. Its fruits are the size of tennis balls and the mature seeds are used in traditional Chinese medicine. The seeds also have a sweet taste when chewed, which was identified to be caused by sweet-tasting proteins called mabinlins. These proteins are 100-400 times sweeter than sucrose on a weight basis.
