Vanilla pompona is a type of orchid that is native to Mexico and northern South America. It is known for its high vanillin content, making it a popular source for vanilla flavoring. Recent studies have shown that the species found in the Peruvian Amazon has a vanillin concentration of up to 9.88g/100g, making it suitable for use in the food and cosmetic industries. This vine-like plant has thicker leaves and stems compared to other vanilla species. It is also one of the few vanilla species that has been definitively identified as being pollinated by a specific bee species, the medium-sized orchid bee Eulaema cingulata. Other bee species visit the flowers, but only E. cingulata is able to transfer pollen to the flower's reproductive organs due to its size.
