Iris sibirica has been used in several regions as a gentle astringent and eye rinse. In Mongolia and the Mongolian diaspora of Inner Mongolia, healers prepared infusions or mild decoctions from the seed capsules and sometimes the flowers to rinse inflamed eyes and ease nasal or oral mucosal irritation; these preparations are noted in traditional pharmacopeias of Mongolia (Traditional Medicine of Mongolia, 1981; Erdenebat, 2010). In parts of Eastern Europe, herbalists collected dried rhizomes, leaves, or young stems to make infusions or decoctions for gargling and as a wash for minor skin irritations; these uses appear in European folk‑medicine compendia (Muntean et al., 2009; Kintzios, 2000). Among peoples of the Altai and Tuva regions, infusions of the seeds and capsules were employed as a mild diuretic and to soothe mild gastric complaints, with documented ethnobotanical surveys listing Iris sibirica among local medicinal plants (Tsarennaya et al., 2006).
Practical preparation method: mild seed‑capsule infusion for external use. Place 2–3 well‑dried seed capsules (or a generous pinch of dried seeds) into 250 ml of just‑boiled water, cover, and steep for 10–15 minutes. Strain through fine cloth. Use warm as an eye rinse or mouth gargle no more than twice daily; avoid contact with the eyes unless prepared under sterile conditions. A comparable preparation used in Hungary for mouth and throat inflammation employed dried leaves or aerial parts in a brief decoction (Kintzios, 2000). Safety note: do not use concentrated or frequent doses internally; large amounts of iris plant material may be emetic and are contraindicated in pregnancy and lactation. Do not exceed labeled durations.
Well‑established constituents in the species include anthocyanins (notably delphinidin derivatives in the flowers), flavonoids (such as isoflavones), and condensed tannins; these compounds plausibly underlie the reported astringent and soothing actions, and are documented in phytochemical surveys of Iris sibirica (Kintzios, 2000; Simova‑Serdjukova et al., 2002).
Modern relevance: interest remains modest but consistent, with recent Mongolian ethnobotanical work citing Iris sibirica in current practice, and commercial herbal supplies of related Iris species and extracts appearing for cosmetic and soothing preparations that draw on traditional astringent applications.
