Veltheimia capensis is a flowering plant that belongs to the Asparagaceae family. It is a tender bulbous perennial with bluish green leaves and thick stems. The plant produces tubular flowers in varying colors, from white with red spots to pink with green or red markings. It is native to the Western Cape Province of South Africa and is commonly known as sand lily, elephant's eye, and winter veltheimia. It grows naturally in dry, arid climates and prefers well-drained, moderately fertile soil with a pH of 5.5-7.5. In temperate regions, it must be grown under glass due to its minimum temperature requirement of 5-7°C. Veltheimia capensis is valued as a drought-resistant ornamental plant and has received the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit.
