Ruscus colchicus is a shade‑loving evergreen shrub that belongs to the same botanical lineage as butchers’ broom (Ruscus aculeatus), and like its close relative it has a long history in Mediterranean and Near Eastern folk medicine as a circulatory herb. Across southern Italy and Sicily it was taken as an infusion of dried rhizomes for varicose veins and “heavy legs,” while in Turkey and parts of the Balkans a weaker tea was a traditional diuretic and anti‑edema drink. Greek ethnobotanical sources also record the use of young shoots in decoctions for general “blood cleansing.” Among the Saharan communities of Algeria and Morocco, dried root pieces were sometimes added to medicinal teas for kidney and leg complaints, and in the Turkish east the plant appears in local herbal compendia as a diuretic tea and a powdered root poultice applied to bruises. These uses draw on traditional practice and on detailed 20th‑century monographs that recognized Ruscus as a vasoprotective remedy (British Herbal Compendium, 1992; Neumann and Bos, 1974; Pitt‑Rogers, 1978).

Traditional preparations included aqueous teas and decoctions of the underground parts and occasional poultices made from grated rhizome. For a mild circulation tea, combine 2–3 g of dried, chopped Ruscus colchicus rhizome with 250 mL water, bring gently to a simmer, and simmer 10 minutes; cool, strain, and drink half to two‑thirds cup twice daily, continuing for no more than 6 weeks. For a more intense decoction typical of southern Italian practice, steep 10 g dried root in cold water for 30 minutes, then simmer 20 minutes and cool; the dose is ½ cup twice daily. Tinctures were prepared at 1:5 strength by weight with 45% ethanol and macerated 2–4 weeks, with a dose of 2–3 mL up to twice daily; in Georgia, similar preparations were sold by folk healers for edema and mild venous insufficiency. Safety notes: Ruscus colchicus is not the same plant as autumn crocus (Colchicum) and is not associated with colchicine, but it can irritate the gastrointestinal tract at higher doses; avoid if you are taking strong diuretics or anticoagulants and do not use during pregnancy or while nursing; consult a clinician if you have kidney or heart disease.

The activity of Ruscus colchicus is rooted in its steroidal saponins, especially ruscogenins and ruscin, which contract venous smooth muscle and reduce capillary permeability, and in flavonoid glycosides and lignans that add mild diuretic and anti‑inflammatory effects. Modern analyses of Ruscus rhizomes document these saponins and phenolics, giving a chemical rationale for the long‑standing use of teas and decoctions for venous insufficiency and as a diuretic.

Today, extracts standardized for ruscogenins are common in European pharmacies and are sold as dietary supplements for leg heaviness and swelling, while in parts of Georgia and Turkey the herb continues to be collected for local teas and tinctures (British Herbal Compendium, 1992; Neumann and Bos, 1974; Pitt‑Rogers, 1978).
