The endocarp of Attalea phalerata is decocted in northeastern Brazil for diarrhea and gastrointestinal upset, sometimes after being crushed and soaked; the distilled sap (“vinho da palmeira”) is used to “lower fevers,” and in northeastern Brazil and northeastern Brazil the leaf is pounded and applied as a poultice to wounds and swellings (Almeida et al., 2005; De Albuquerque et al., 2007). Elsewhere in Brazil the mesocarp and kernel meal are taken as a mild tea or infusion for coughs and as a tonic, while in Pará, Brazil the endocarp and kernel meal are decocted as a remedy for dysentery (Freire, 1935; Corrêa, 1978; Albuquerque et al., 2020). In parts of Pará and northeastern Brazil, a cold infusion of the young leaf is taken for digestive complaints and to reduce “fevers,” and in the Brazilian Amazon, a leaf infusion is employed as an emmenagogue (Siqueira, 1988; Albuquerque et al., 2020).
Active constituents reported for this species include high levels of lauric, myristic, and other medium‑chain fatty acids in the oil, phytosterols such as β‑sitosterol, and phenolic compounds including condensed tannins; these lipids and astringent tannins plausibly support the observed astringent, demulcent, and cough‑soothing activities (Freire, 1935; Albuquerque et al., 2020).
A simple preparation that reflects traditional practice is an endocarp decoction: combine 1–2 tablespoons of crushed shell pieces (about 8–12 g) with 1 cup of water, bring to a boil, and simmer 10–15 minutes; remove from heat, steep 5–10 minutes, and strain. This mild decoction is taken in small doses, 1–2 cups per day. Do not use the oil as a tea; due to its lauric‑rich fat profile, consult a qualified practitioner before internal use in pregnancy, during lactation, or if you have gallbladder or liver disease (Almeida et al., 2005; Albuquerque et al., 2020).
Attalea phalerata continues to be harvested locally for food and medicinal use, and its oil and seed products remain commercially available in Brazil; modern studies examine the antioxidant and antimicrobial potential of the oil and extracts, complementing the long‑standing household applications of endocarp, leaf, and sap preparations.
