Griselinia littoralis, also known as kapuka or New Zealand broadleaf, is a fast-growing evergreen tree native to New Zealand. It can reach up to 10 meters in height and has round, dense foliage with leathery, glossy yellow-green leaves. This tree produces small greenish flowers and black berries in specific seasons. It is found throughout New Zealand, particularly in coastal areas, and is also cultivated in other mild oceanic climates. Griselinia littoralis prefers free draining soil, full sun or semi-shaded areas, and high rainfall for optimal growth. It has a long lifespan of over fifty years and goes through three phases of forest growth. The flowers are pollinated by birds and the seeds are dispersed by them as well. However, this tree is susceptible to grazing by herbivores and predators such as goats, deer, possums, and insects. Overall, Griselinia littoralis is a hardy and adaptable tree that is valued for its tolerance of harsh conditions and is commonly used as a windbreak or screen.
