It prefers well-drained, dry to mesic soils and is often found at high elevations.
Woodsia scopulina, also known as Rocky Mountain woodsia, is a deciduous perennial fern that belongs to the Woodsiaceae family. It is native to the western and northern regions of the United States and Canada. This fern typically grows to be 10-30 centimeters tall and can be found in mesic to dry rock crevices. Its fronds are twice pinnate and have a medium to pale green color. The rachis, or main stem, is grooved on top and covered with long hairs that have a globular gland at the tip. Woodsia scopulina is commonly found in mountainous areas near the west coast of North America, from southern Alaska to southern California, and in the Rocky Mountains from British Columbia to Colorado. It can also be found in isolated populations in northeastern North America. This fern prefers sunny rocky habitats such as rock crevices, talus slopes, and rock ledges, and is often found at high elevations.
