Tsuga diversifolia, also known as the northern Japanese hemlock or kometsuga, is a type of conifer found in the Japanese islands of Honshū, Kyūshū, and Shikoku. It is often used as a garden tree in Europe and North America and has been cultivated since 1861. This evergreen tree can grow up to 25 meters tall with a narrow, dense, and conical crown. Its young shoots are short, pale, and orange to red-brown in color. The needles are dark green, glossy, and arranged densely in a linear-oblong shape. The bark is orange-brown and peels vertically, while the buds are deep purple-red. The tree produces small purple flowers and dark brown cones that are pendulous and slightly convex.
