Hesperocyparis macrocarpa, also known as Cupressus macrocarpa or the Monterey cypress, is a coniferous tree endemic to California. It is found naturally only on the Central Coast, with its distribution limited to two small populations near Carmel. The tree is known for its irregular, flat-topped shape due to strong winds in its native area. It can reach heights of up to 40 meters and has scale-like, bright green foliage that releases a lemony aroma when crushed. The tree's seed cones are globose to oblong and its pollen cones release pollen in late winter or early spring. While it is believed that some trees can live up to 2,000 years, the longest-lived recorded specimen is 284 years old. The Monterey cypress has been widely planted outside of its native range, particularly along the coasts of California and Oregon, and has also been successfully grown in other countries such as New Zealand and South Africa. The tree has been used for timber, furniture, and as a windbreak on farms. Several cultivars have been selected for garden use, and the tree has been used in the production of hybrid species. Chemical compounds found in the tree include isocupressic acid, monoterpenes
