Ethnobotanical Uses

Sphagnum palustre has long been used in Europe, Britain, and North America as a wound dressing and compress, with healers employing fresh or dried moss to cover cuts, burns, and bleeding lesions (Broholm et al., 2016). In northern Europe, the plant was also simmered in water to make a medicinal bath or rinse for irritated skin and minor wounds, a practice noted in historical German and Russian materia medica (Hegi and Oediger-Wolf, 1952; Drobotko et al., 1956). Among coastal Maori communities, similar moss mats were prepared by rinsing, boiling briefly, and laying the cooled moss over abrasions or as diaper liners (Riley, 1994). Across North American forests, Algonquian and other northeastern peoples gathered the moss in spring and summer for poultices and as packing for surgical sites (Bennett et al., 2021).

Practical recipe – wound compress/ointment base. Rinse 50–100 g of clean Sphagnum palustre in cool water and squeeze out excess moisture. Place the damp moss in a small pot with 200 ml of water, bring to a gentle boil for 3 minutes, then turn off the heat and let stand for 10 minutes. Cool until warm but not hot, then apply a thin layer to gauze or directly to the wound and cover with a clean bandage. Leave in place 30–60 minutes, replace twice daily. For an oil salve base, pack the damp moss tightly into a glass jar, cover with 300 ml of sunflower oil, and infuse for 2 weeks on a windowsill, shaking daily; strain and apply a small amount to unbroken skin as needed. Do not ingest, avoid use on deep puncture wounds or those showing infection, and seek medical care for deep lacerations or persistent bleeding (Bennett et al., 2021).

Active constituents. The moss is rich in sphagnan, a polyuronic acid that imparts acidity and cation-exchange capacity, along with hemicelluloses (galactans and arabinogalactans) that swell into a gel and phenolics (p-hydroxybenzoic, vanillic, and caffeic acids) that provide antioxidant activity (Bragazza et al., 2006; Clymo, 1963). These components are consistent with the plant’s historical use as a dressing that wicks blood and fluids, inhibits spoilage, and soothes irritated skin.

Modern relevance. Contemporary wound-care research continues to explore sphagnan’s antibacterial and hemostatic properties, and sphagnum products remain available from specialty suppliers for pads, burn compresses, and diaper liners.

Common products:
- Sphagnum peat moss harvested from living lawns of Sphagnum palustre (and other Sphagnum species) is sold under the trade names “sphagnum peat moss” or “peat moss” for horticulture. The product is typically supplied baled or bagged (air-dry moisture ≤ 45%) and incorporated into potting and seed-starting media to increase water-holding and cation-exchange capacity.

Industrial and craft applications:
- Peat fuel: Harvested peat from S. palustre–dominated bogs is dried and milled to produce fuel peat for power plants in northern Europe (e.g., Finland, Estonia) and other temperate regions. Peat supply chains include field extraction, drying in windrows, and milling to a standard particle size.
- Peat extraction fields are engineered with drainage and surface re-wetting plans; conservation-sensitive sourcing follows national or regional directives to limit habitat loss and biodiversity impacts.

Food and beverages (non-medicinal):
- No edible uses, food ingredients, or beverages are reported for S. palustre.

Colorants and tanning:
- No reliable records of extractable dyes, inks, or tannins from S. palustre being used in dyeing or leather tanning.

Wood and fiber:
- No timber or structural fiber use. The plant is a non-woody moss.

Fragrance and cosmetics:
- No fragrance or cosmetic ingredient uses are recorded for S. palustre.

Properties relevant to use:
- High water-holding capacity (≈10–20× dry mass in this species), open cell structure with large pores, and pH ≈ 4–5 create acidity and provide physical water storage without compaction.
- Cation-exchange capacity (approx. 80–150 cmolc kg–1) and phenolic polymers (sphagnan) buffer nutrients and hold cations, improving growing media performance.
- Low stiffness and resilience make baled peat friable, aiding mixing and homogeneity in media blends.

Standards and regulation:
- Horticultural peat is classified by national standards (e.g., EN 13041 for growing media) defining moisture, pH, particle size, and organic matter content.
- Fuel peat is supplied to power stations under national specifications (e.g., ash, moisture, and calorific limits) and environmental permits; in the EU, conservation policies (EU Habitats Directive, Natura 2000) and national permitting can restrict extraction from high-value sites.

Sustainability and sourcing:
- Peat harvesting depends on hydrology and bog condition; extraction typically replaces the bog’s water table with drainage. Restoration by surface re-wetting, Sphagnum reseeding, and site monitoring can reduce net loss, but conversion to agriculture or forestry can cause irreversible habitat loss. Sourcing increasingly emphasizes certified or limited-extraction schemes and options to substitute peat with renewable media components (e.g., composted bark, coco coir) in horticultural mixes.
