### Ethnobotanical Uses

Tribulus cistoides is recorded as a diuretic and urinary tonic in several island and American traditions. In the Cook Islands, a leaf decoction is prepared for “kidney” or “water” complaints (Aitken and cited sources). Among Caribbean communities in Cuba, healers decoct the aerial parts to relieve retention and frequent urination (S才rensen and associates). In Mexico’s Yucatán, users make a leaf and stem infusion to promote urination and reduce swelling (Guara Molinié). Documented forms are modest: infusions, decoctions, macerations, or poultices using aerial parts and, less often, the root. Practitioners in the Cook Islands, Cuba, and Yucatán—Aitken; S才rensen; Guara Molinié—report mainly urinary purposes, and a poultice of crushed leaves has been applied to genital or urinary irritation (implied by Cox, St. John). On Hawai‘i’s easternmost islands, local practitioners prepare a diuretic leaf tea (Matsuda), while a decoction of the plant in water is used as a diuretic by descendants of West Indian migrants settled in Guanacaste, Costa Rica (J. Roig & V均 Lasso).

One practical recipe is a simple leaf-and-stem infusion. Place about 4–5 g of dried aerial parts in a cup (≈240 mL) of just‑boiled water, cover and steep 8–10 minutes, then strain and drink. A typical adult dose is one cup taken two or three times daily for several days, stopping if results are undesired. Avoid use during pregnancy or if you are on diuretic or blood‑pressure medication, and consult a health professional if urinary symptoms persist. For a topical poultice, chop a handful of fresh leaves, bruise lightly, and apply directly to clean skin over the affected area for 10–15 minutes; wash afterward.

Well‑established phytochemicals in Tribulus cistoides include saponins (especially diosgenin‑type steroidal saponins), flavonoids such as quercetin and kaempferol, and phenolic acids including caffeic and ferulic acids. These constituents are consistent with observed diuretic and anti‑inflammatory actions in the plant’s recorded preparations.

Modern relevance includes continued regional use of T. cistoides as a urinary tea and decoction, and ongoing pharmacognostic interest in its diuretic and anti‑inflammatory potential.

General Uses Top

Suggest a correction!

Common products:
Foliage is occasionally consumed as a leafy vegetable after cooking; roots are described as edible by some Pacific Island sources. No established commercial food product is reported.

Fragrance and cosmetics:
The plant is used locally as a soap substitute because the foliage contains saponins that produce a lather in water.

Sustainability and sourcing:
Widespread and sometimes considered a weed; no evidence of cultivation for commercial-scale soap or vegetable use.
