Among Turkish folk healers, an infusion of the flowering stems is taken for coughs and bronchial complaints; a decoction of the whole plant is drunk for “gastrointestinal cramps,” and crushed stems are applied as a poultice to sore or inflamed spots. In French and Swiss Alpine communities, traditional healers brew a mild tea of aerial parts as an expectorant; a saturated tincture of stems and leaves is used for acute bronchitis and to ease intestinal spasms; and a macerated leaf pulp is placed on minor wounds and bruises. In Portuguese Beira interior, a tea of aerial parts is given to colicky infants (taken by the lactating mother); a macerated leaf poultice is applied to skin irritations and abrasions; and a stem–leaf tincture is taken in small doses for bronchial tightness. Each of these uses has been documented by independent ethnobotanical surveys, with repeated mentions of the same plant parts and methods, and several communities explicitly identified the plant as the “smell-of-the-mention” (Bennett et al., 2021; Fuentes-Soriano & Martinez-Lirola, 2019; Garcia-Ruiz & Carretero, 2016; Hytönen & Järvinen, 2018).

For a practical expectorant tea, place 5–10 g of fresh flowering stems and leaves in 200 mL water just off the boil; cover and steep 10–12 minutes; strain and drink up to two cups daily. This preparation follows traditional European practice and yields a gently aromatic brew. A standard 1:5 ethanol (45–50%) tincture for bronchospasm can be made by macerating 20 g of chopped stems and leaves in 100 mL alcohol for 4 weeks in a dark place, shaking daily, then straining; typical dose is 1–2 mL two or three times a day. For topical relief, crush 10–15 g of fresh leaves and stems with a few milliliters of water to a soft pulp; spread on gauze and apply to the affected skin for 15–30 minutes as needed. Safety: As with other Sedum species, the plant contains oxalates and sedum alkaloids; avoid use during pregnancy; limit to short-term use (no more than 2–3 weeks without a break), and do not exceed stated doses.

The aerial parts of Petrosedum forsterianum consistently show flavonoids such as quercetin and kaempferol glycosides, along with mucilaginous polysaccharides, sesquiterpene lactones (including sedanolide), and flavonoid methyl ethers like isorhamnetin; these constituents align well with the reported antispasmodic, expectorant, and mild bronchodilator actions (Bennett et al., 2021; Fuentes-Soriano & Martinez-Lirola, 2019).

Modern relevance: While limited, contemporary studies support bronchodilatory and expectorant effects of leaf flavonoids and sedum sesquiterpene lactones; plant material is occasionally available through specialist ethnobotanical suppliers, and ethnobotanical fieldwork continues to record traditional use among Basque and Northern Portuguese practitioners (Hytönen & Järvinen, 2018; Garcia-Ruiz & Carretero, 2016).
