Across Southeast Asia, Picrasma javanica is recorded in multiple ethnomedicinal traditions as a bitter digestive aid and febrifuge. In the Kinh settlements of northern and central Vietnam, a leaf decoction is taken for fever and stomach upset (according to Vietnamese medicinal plant compendia), while crushed leaves are applied as a poultice for sores and swelling (Nguyen Van Duong, 1999). Among the Dayak communities of Malaysian Borneo, a bark infusion is drunk to stimulate appetite and ease colic (Iyengar and Jayaraman, 1983). In the Javanese herbal tradition, a bark decoction is given for fevers and parasitic complaints (Heyne, 1927).
Documented preparations typically use either leaf or bark materials, prepared either as a hot infusion or a short decoction, and sometimes as a direct poultice of crushed foliage. These uses emphasize the plant’s pronounced bitterness and astringent qualities.
A practical and commonly described preparation is a mild leaf infusion. Place 2–3 g of clean dried or fresh leaves in a cup, pour over 250 mL of recently boiled water, cover, and steep for 10–15 minutes. Strain and sip half to one cup once or twice daily. This dose aligns with traditional practice for mild stomach upset or low-grade fever. The bark infusion follows the same method but is typically reduced to 1–2 g per cup to limit gastrointestinal irritation. Bitter preparations should be avoided in pregnancy and should not be given to young children; prolonged, high‑dose use is not recommended without professional guidance due to potential gastric irritation and bitterness strength.
The bitterness and presumed activity are linked to the quassinoid triterpenes, the same family that gives Picrasma quassioides its distinctive pharmacological profile. Javanica specimens have yielded compounds such as quassin and picrasin I, alongside canthin‑6‑one alkaloids and β‑sitosterol (Liu et al., 2014; Harding et al., 2000). These constituents plausibly underlie the traditional digestive‑stimulant, antipyretic, and topical anti‑inflammatory uses reported locally.
Current interest remains largely at the research level: in vitro studies on Javanica extracts have shown anti‑inflammatory and antimalarial activity, and modern extracts are available in specialty or e‑commerce channels primarily as bitters or standardized quassinoid fractions (Nguyen et al., 2020). While the traditional tea and poultice remain part of household practice in parts of Vietnam and Indonesia, commercial products are still niche, and the use of this species is overshadowed by the more widely distributed Picrasma quassioides.
