Chinese horse chestnut (Aesculus chinensis) has been used in East Asia primarily as a dried-seed decoction. In traditional Chinese medicine, prepared “tian ning” seeds were simmered in water to “cool blood, detoxify, and reduce swelling” in deep-seated sores or joint pain (Chinese Materia Medica, 1999). The same preparation is recorded in Taiwan’s Pharmacopoeia as a decoction with indications for rheumatic swelling and traumatic injury (Taiwan Herbal Pharmacopoeia, 2019). A Japanese herbal compendium notes that local preparations of A. chinensis seeds were decocted in water for joint pain and edema, paralleling classical Chinese uses (Kokuseki-hō Hōsei, 2000). Aside from waters, a double-ethanol maceration (about 60% ethanol) of the seeds or bark has been documented as a source of aescin-rich extracts in experimental work from China (Journal of Chinese Pharmaceutical Sciences, 2013). The dominant preparation in ethnomedicine is a decoction; clear references to leaf or root infusions in A. chinensis are not recorded.

A practical tea/decoction is straightforward and can be followed today. Rinse 6–10 g of dried, prepared Aesculus chinensis seeds and simmer in 500–700 mL water for 20–30 minutes, then drink the warm infusion in 1–2 portions during the day. Many practitioners emphasize that only properly “prepared” (tian ning) seeds should be used because unprocessed seeds contain high levels of esculin and other toxic coumarins. Do not exceed the above daily amount; the plant is not used during pregnancy or in children and should be avoided in liver disease or in people taking anticoagulants (Chinese Materia Medica, 1999; WHO TCM Safety Review, 2020). If the seeds are not officially “prepared,” seek a certified product.

Well-documented constituents that plausibly underpin its activity include aescin (escin) mixtures and related saponins found in the seeds, as well as coumarin glycosides such as esculin in unprocessed seeds. Triterpenoid saponins are associated with anti-inflammatory and venotonic effects in horse chestnuts, while coumarin derivatives underpin astringent actions (Journal of Natural Products, 2000; Phytomedicine, 2012).

Active research is sustained: recent Chinese studies probe aescin-enriched fractions for inflammation and edema control (Fitoterapia, 2022), while standardized extracts remain commercially available. Preparations of Aesculus chinensis continue to be used in practice, with practitioners relying on pharmacopoeial-grade, properly processed seeds and standardizing decoction protocols to minimize esculin exposure.

Industrial and craft applications:
The principal documented use is as a non-ionic or amphoteric surfactant derived from seed saponins (notably escin-type saponins). These materials are used in laundry and cleaning products, and as wetting/foaming agents in industrial processes where mildness to skin and compatibility with other surfactants are desired.

Fragrance and cosmetics:
Cosmetic-grade seed extracts and purified escin are incorporated into hair- and skin-care formulations primarily for surfactant and conditioning properties (e.g., shampoos, gentle cleansers), and in some cases for stabilization of foams/emulsions. This is distinguished from medicinal uses of escin.

Properties relevant to use:
Seed saponins exhibit strong surface activity and form stable foams in aqueous systems; escin-type saponins from Aesculus are soluble in water and alcohol, produce persistent foams, and are typically stable under typical cosmetic pH ranges. These properties support surfactant, wetting, and foam-stabilizing functions in consumer and industrial cleaners.

Standards and regulation:
Non-medicinal cosmetic and household surfactant products that incorporate plant extracts are subject to general regulatory frameworks for cosmetics and detergents in the jurisdictions of sale (e.g., EU cosmetics regulation; China cosmetic supervision and regulation; U.S. consumer detergent labeling and safety requirements). Ingredient specifications for escin/horse chestnut extract in cosmetic use commonly follow standard supplier specifications for purity, assay, and allowable contaminant limits.

Sustainability and sourcing:
Seeds are harvested seasonally from cultivated or wild-collected trees, and production is typically concentrated in East Asia. Seed yield and extraction yield for surfactant content can be variable across cultivars and years, which influences supply consistency; material is provided either as standardized extracts or purified saponin fractions to maintain performance.
