General Uses Top

Suggest a correction!

Common products:
Melia dubia provides sawn timber and veneer used for furniture, light construction, packaging, and plywood; it is also processed into pulp for paper and printing grades.

Wood and fiber:
The wood is moderately heavy and straight-grained, with good machining and finishing properties; it is suitable for furniture frames, interior joinery, doors, shuttering, crates, pallets, and plywood/veneer. The fiber (bast) is used for twine, ropes, and coarse cordage; the wood is suitable for particleboard and medium-density fiberboard (MDF).

Food and beverages (non-medicinal):
No verified non-medicinal food or beverage uses have been reported for this taxon.

Colorants and tanning:
No verified dye, tannin, or ink uses have been reported for this taxon.

Fragrance and cosmetics:
No verified fragrance or cosmetic uses have been reported for this taxon.

Industrial and craft applications:
The wood turns and machines well and takes fasteners and finishes, enabling furniture making, panel products, and carpentry.

Properties relevant to use:
Workability and finishing are reported as favorable, with air-dry density in the medium range for hardwoods; small logs are reported as prone to end checking, affecting sawing strategy.

Sustainability and sourcing:
Melia dubia is widely cultivated in tropical plantations and farm forestry for its rapid growth and good form; management aims to minimize defects such as end checking through appropriate harvesting and drying practices.

Standards and regulation:
Trade and grading generally follow national timber rules (e.g., IS standards for wood-based panels and timber grading in major producer countries) and regional pulp and paper specifications for kraft/bleached grades. Pulp specifications follow regional practice (e.g., ISO brightness, moisture, and ash limits) for furnishes containing fast-grown hardwoods.
