General Uses Top
Suggest a correction!Industrial and craft applications:
Widely planted in urban forestry and street landscaping in Northern Europe for its tolerance of exposed, windy, and saline coastal conditions, and its relatively compact form. The dense, fine-grained wood is occasionally used for turnery, tool handles, small joinery, and musical instrument parts.
Wood and fiber:
Wood is hard and fine-grained, with a heavy, straight or slightly interlocked grain and moderate shrinkage. Heartwood is medium brown and distinct from the sapwood; sapwood is narrower and lighter. Durability is moderate to good in exposed situations (e.g., hedging species in maritime conditions). Typical end-uses include furniture components, carving and engraving stock, turned objects, tool handles, and small specialty items.
Properties relevant to use:
High density and hardness support dimensional stability and good wear resistance in small, load-bearing components. Fine, even grain enables surface finishing with low tear-out in turnery and carving. Moderate natural durability confers modest resistance to decay in outdoor service.
Sustainability and sourcing:
Native to northern Europe (Scandinavia, northern Britain, the Baltic region), it is used in native or near-native planting mixes and in climate-adapted urban forestry, complementing local supply chains.

Germination/Propagation Top
Suggest a correction or add new data!| Sow seeds immediately as their viability decreases rapidly, or they best germinate when fresh. If stored, seeds might need temperature cycling and patience to germinate. |
