Amelanchier ovalis, also known as snowy mespilus or serviceberry, is a deciduous shrub in the rose family. It is native to central and southern Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East. The plant produces edible pome fruits that can be eaten raw or cooked. It is a thornless shrub with a spreading growth and can reach heights of up to 5 meters. The leaves are round or egg-shaped and the flowers are white and herbaceous. The fruits are small and black when ripe. A. ovalis is found in prealpine and submediterranean climates and prefers sunny, dry slopes and rocky substrates. It is an important food source for insects and is used for land restoration and afforestation. However, it can be infested by pests and diseases such as gall mites, rust fungi, and fire blight. A. ovalis has also been used for medicinal purposes and its fruits can be processed into jams and spirits.
