Morus nigra, also known as black mulberry, is a flowering plant native to southwestern Asia. Its exact natural range is unknown due to centuries of cultivation. This deciduous tree can reach up to 12 meters in height and has leaves that are 10-20 centimeters long. The fruit of the black mulberry is a cluster of small, dark purple drupes that are richly flavored. It is often confused with other mulberry species, but can be distinguished by its uniformly hairy leaves. Black mulberries are widely cultivated in Europe and Asia for their edible fruit. They are also used in traditional medicine, particularly for treating ringworm. In Europe, the largest concentration of black mulberry trees can be found in the vineyards of Pukanec, Slovakia. Although it was originally imported to Britain for silk production, it was unsuccessful in that endeavor and is now mainly grown for its fruit and ornamental value.
