Romneya coulteri, also known as Coulter's Matilija poppy or California tree poppy, is a perennial flowering plant native to southern California and Baja California. It is commonly found in dry canyons and is known for its large, showy flowers. The plant can grow over 2 meters tall and has gray-green leaves with lance-shaped lobes. Its inflorescence consists of a single large flower with white petals and a cluster of yellow stamens. The plant spreads aggressively through underground rhizomes and has been nominated as the state flower of California. In the UK, it has received the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit. The plant's chemical composition includes the alkaloids protopine, coulteropine, and romneine.

Germination/Propagation Top
Suggest a correction or add new data!Sow seeds directly at 4°C. |
Germination Successful Only with GA3: for these seeds, the use of Gibberellic Acid is not just beneficial but essential for germination to occur. |
store in moist sand in shade; check every spring; sow as soon as radicles appear |
