Summary
Lolium perenne, commonly known as perennial ryegrass, is a grass from the family Poaceae. It is native to Europe, Asia and northern Africa, but is widely cultivated and naturalised around the world. It is a low-growing, tufted, hairless grass, with a bunching (or tillering) growth habit. It is an important pasture and forage plant, and is used in many pasture seed mixes. It is also used to prevent erosion and to stabilise soils, as well as creating a hardwearing turf for lawns and golf courses. It is also used to overseed winter lawns and sports pitches, especially in temperate climates. It is similar to Italian ryegrass and couch, but can be distinguished by its spikelets set on the edge of the stem, and its stem which is folded lengthwise in bud.
