In Brazil, Paraguay, and parts of the Amazon, Piper umbellatum is a widely used medicinal herb. Practitioners prepare infusions or decoctions of the leaves for digestive discomfort and to ease fever and inflammation. Brazilian field manuals and materia medica note that pariparoba leaf teas or decoctions are taken in small cups several times daily as a digestive and antipyretic (Van den Berg, 1984; Sannomiya et al., 2005). In Achuar and Shuar communities of upper Amazonia, fresh leaf infusions or decoctions are drunk for fever and stomach complaints, and a macerated leaf poultice may be applied topically to relieve bruises and arthritic pains (Bennett et al., 2021). Among the Kaxinawá of eastern Peru, leaf decoctions are similarly valued for fever and pain relief (Elisabetsky et al., 1990; Cruz et al., 1995).
A practical tea can be made by combining 3–5 g of fresh chopped leaves (or 1.5–2 g dried) with about 200 mL of water. Bring the water to a boil, pour over the leaves, cover, and steep for 10–12 minutes, then strain. If a stronger preparation is desired, simmer the same leaf amount for 8–10 minutes to make a decoction. Drink a cup two or three times a day; some sources suggest adding a little honey for taste. Because the species contains estragole and safrole, use sparingly and do not consume in large amounts or over long periods. Avoid use in pregnancy and during breastfeeding, and be cautious if you are sensitive to herbal teas or taking sedative, diuretic, or gastrointestinal medications (Sannomiya et al., 2005).
Phytochemically, the leaves and stems contain a documented essential oil fraction with estragole and safrole, accompanied by β-pinene, limonene, α-pinene, and eucalyptol. These constituents plausibly account for the reported carminative, spasmolytic, and mild febrifuge effects associated with teas and decoctions (Sannomiya et al., 2005; Elisabetsky et al., 1990).
Modern relevance remains strong: commercial pariparoba teas are sold in Brazil and Paraguay, and current ethnopharmacological research continues to investigate anti-inflammatory and gastrointestinal activities in laboratory models, while traditional use endures in home remedies and community practice (Monte et al., 2014; Sannomiya et al., 2005).
