Salix atrocinerea, also known as grey willow or large gray willow, is a species of willow that can grow up to 12 meters tall. It is a pioneer species that quickly colonizes poor soils. This plant is mostly found in Western Europe and North Africa, including countries like Britain, France, Spain, and Morocco. It is also commonly found in the Iberian Peninsula and Corsica. The grey willow easily hybridizes with other willow species and can be identified by its flowers that bloom from January to March or April. It is a hardy species that can grow in a variety of environments, including freshly disturbed land, acidic soil, and even on beaches near the sea. It is typically found in sandy or gravel shores of rivers, streams, and ponds, as well as meadows, valleys, and hedgerows. This plant can be found at sea level up to 2,000 meters in altitude. On Cortegada Island, the grey willow forms a forest in waterlogged soils, while a mixed forest with Alnus glutinosa can be found on the west side of the island.
