Casearia sylvestris, a shrub or small tree common in Central America and the Caribbean, has a long history of use in folk medicine. Among the indigenous peoples of Panama, Bennett et al. (2021) recorded that the fresh leaves are boiled into a tea to relieve coughs and colds, while the bark is decocted for stomach aches and used as a poultice for skin irritations. In Costa Rica, González et al. (2019) described a decoction of the roots taken as a tonic for fatigue and as a topical wash for minor wounds. The Dominican Republic’s traditional healers, as documented by Mendoza & Silva (2018), prepare a maceration of dried leaves in alcohol to treat urinary tract infections and use a poultice of bark powder for rheumatic pain. These preparations all involve infusions, decoctions, tinctures, or poultices of leaves, bark, or roots.

A simple, safe tea can be made at home with dried leaves. Use about 5 g (roughly one tablespoon) of dried leaf material and 250 ml of freshly boiled water. Pour the hot water over the leaves, cover, and let steep for 10 minutes. Strain the liquid and sip slowly. This mild infusion is generally well tolerated; however, limit consumption to no more than two cups per day, avoid use during pregnancy, and discontinue if any gastrointestinal discomfort occurs.

Phytochemical studies of C. sylvestris have identified several compounds that likely underpin its traditional uses. The leaves contain flavonoids such as quercetin and kaempferol, which are known for their anti‑inflammatory and antioxidant effects. Triterpenoids, particularly ursolic acid, have been isolated from the bark and roots and are associated with antimicrobial and wound‑healing properties. Tannins present in the bark contribute to astringent and antiseptic activity. These constituents provide a plausible chemical basis for the plant’s reported benefits in respiratory, digestive, and skin conditions.

Current research continues to explore the anti‑inflammatory potential of C. sylvestris extracts, and the species is now available in some specialty herbal tea blends marketed for immune support. Its enduring use by local communities and the growing scientific interest suggest that this humble shrub may yet yield new therapeutic insights.
