Bruguiera cylindrica, the cylindrical mangrove, has a long history of use among coastal peoples of South and Southeast Asia. In the Sundarbans of Bangladesh, dried bark is boiled in water for a short decoction to reduce fever (Ahmed et al., 2010). Along the western coast of Kerala, India, fresh leaves are crushed and applied as a warm poultice to relieve swelling and minor wounds (Nair & Menon, 2015). In the Malay Peninsula, dried leaves are steeped as a mild tea to calm coughs and sore throats (Chin & Azman, 2008). Communities in the Philippines further prepare a macerated bark tincture in 40 % ethanol to treat dysentery and gastrointestinal upset (Castillo et al., 2012). Each of these practices specifies a particular plant part – bark for decoctions, leaves for teas or poultices, and bark again for tinctures – and the preparations are documented in peer‑reviewed ethnobotanical surveys.
One simple preparation still used locally is a leaf tea. Two teaspoons of dried Bruguiera cylindrica leaves (about 4 g) are placed in a cup of just‑boiled water (200 ml) and allowed to steep for 5–7 minutes before straining.
