Among the Maya of Belize, slow decoctions of young leaves are taken for fevers and chills; slow cooling decoctions of roots have been used for painful stomach complaints; and warm infusions of fresh leaves are given to children with cough or common colds (Howard, 1989). On the Pacific islands of Palau and Pohnpei, leaf infusions are taken for stomachaches and diarrhea (Whistler, 1992). In tropical South America, traditional healers prepare strong leaf infusions as an emetic for purges; the bark and root have been used in decoctions for dysentery and malaria‑like fevers (Janzen, 1983; Bennett et al., 2021).
A concise preparation used for fevers or coughs is a mild leaf infusion. Rinse 10–20 young leaves, bring 1 liter of water to a simmer, add the leaves, remove from heat, cover, and steep for 10–15 minutes; strain and cool to drinking temperature. Take warm in small cups several times daily for a day or two (Howard, 1989). Stronger leaf infusions used as emetics are made by steeping two large handfuls of chopped leaves in 500 mL of hot water for 15–30 minutes (Bennett et al., 2021). Safety: the plant’s latex and seeds are toxic and should not be ingested; avoid in pregnancy and with young children; any preparation should be slow‑cooling decoctions or mild infusions that do not cause vomiting, and use only under knowledgeable local guidance.
The species contains diterpenoids, notably curcains, which contribute to reported wound‑healing and anti‑parasitic activities, along with flavonoids such as quercetin and kaempferol and phenolic compounds that provide antioxidant effects (Bennett et al., 2021). Curcin, a lectin from the seeds, is a principal toxin in that part of the plant (Bennett et al., 2021).
Current relevance and use: active research continues on curcains and curcin for their biological activities, and ornamental plantings persist across warm climates, though medical use remains guided by local and historical practice.
