Smilax aspera, also known as common smilax, rough bindweed, sarsaparille, and Mediterranean smilax, is a flowering vine in the greenbriar family. It is a perennial, evergreen climber with a flexible stem and sharp thorns. The leaves are heart-shaped with toothed and spiny margins, and the flowers are small and fragrant. The plant is found in Central Africa, Mediterranean Europe, temperate and tropical Asia, and is also naturalized in other regions. It grows in woods and scrubs at altitudes up to 1,200 meters. The fruits of this plant are a source of nourishment for many bird species.
