Veratrum californicum is a poisonous plant native to western North America, growing from near sea level to as high as 11,000 feet. It has an erect, unbranched, heavily leafy stem resembling a cornstalk, and many inch-wide flowers with 6 white tepals, a green center, 6 stamens, and a 3-branched pistil. It displays mast seeding, blooming during midsummer from July to August. It is a source of teratogens which can cause birth defects in animals that graze upon it.
