General Uses Top

Common products:
- Essential oil (leaf and twig hydrodistillation, yielding a pale‑yellow oil; typical yield 0.5–1.5 % w/w fresh leaf weight; oil contains linalool as a major component).
- Timber (hardwood with a straight grain, employed locally for general construction, furniture and small craft objects).

Industrial and craft applications:
- Essential oil is a natural source of linalool for the fragrance and flavor industry, used in perfumes, soaps, detergents, air‑fresheners and as a flavoring in confectionery where permitted.
- Wood is employed in light construction, joinery, paneling, flooring, furniture, veneer and turnery; its moderate hardness and straight grain enable easy machining and finishing.

Wood and fiber:
- The wood of Aniba riparia is harvested for general construction, carpentry, small‑scale furniture, decorative veneer and carving; bark is not commonly utilized.

Fragrance and cosmetics:
- The leaf essential oil is incorporated into perfumes, colognes, body lotions, soaps, shampoos and other personal‑care products as a top note, providing a sweet, floral aroma.

Properties relevant to use:
- Essential oil composition is dominated by linalool (typically 60–80 % of total volatiles), with secondary constituents such as eucalyptol and α‑terpineol, as determined by GC–MS analyses.
- Wood physical characteristics include a medium density, good dimensional stability and low shrinkage, which together support its use in construction and fine woodworking.

Standards and regulation:
- The essential oil is subject to IFRA standards for fragrance raw materials and ISO 11016 for determination of linalool content; it must also comply with EU Cosmetics Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009 when used in personal‑care products.
- Timber extraction falls under Brazilian Forest Code (Lei 12.727/2012) and requires documented forest‑management plans; export of harvested wood may be subject to IBAMA permits.

Sustainability and sourcing:
- Commercial production of leaf oil is largely based on cultivated plantations in Brazil and neighboring Amazonian countries, reducing pressure on wild stands.
- Timber is sourced through selective cutting and regeneration monitoring; regional forestry authorities promote sustainable management practices, and some plantations seek FSC certification to ensure responsible sourcing.
