Salvia columbariae, commonly known as chia, is an annual plant native to California, Nevada, Utah, Arizona, New Mexico, Sonora, and Baja California. It was an important food source for Native Americans, who used it medicinally, as a food source, and to make fiber for dwellings. The inflorescence usually consists of one or two clusters, and the bracts are round and awn-tipped. The plant grows 10 to 50 cm tall and prefers good drainage, sun, and dry weather. The seeds are used to make a thick beverage, cakes or mush, pinole, and porridge. The Cahuilla, Ohlone, Kawaiisu, and Mahuna used the gelatinous seeds to cleanse out foreign matter in the eyes, and the Ohlone also used it to reduce fevers.
