Essential oil obtained by hydrodistillation of the aerial parts is the primary commercial product. Dried aerial herb is also supplied as raw material for oil extraction and for catnip‑based pet products.
Industrial and craft applications:
The essential oil is incorporated into fragrance formulations for soaps, detergents, scented candles and air‑fresheners. In addition, because nepetalactone and other terpenes repel insects, the oil is used as a natural insect‑repellent component in commercial repellent blends.
Fragrance and cosmetics:
The oil’s characteristic minty‑herbaceous aroma makes it a valued ingredient in perfume compositions and in scented cosmetics such as lotions, bath gels and aromatherapy diffusers.
Properties relevant to use:
The oil contains nepetalactone (the catnip attractant) together with monoterpenes such as α‑pinene, β‑pinene and linalool. Typical physical parameters are density 0.93–0.95 g cm⁻³, refractive index ≈ 1.48 and acid value
