### Ethnobotanical Uses

Lamium amplexicaule, the common henbit, has been used medicinally in parts of Europe and Asia as a mild herbal tea or poultice. Among German-speaking communities of eastern Europe, herbal practitioners noted a weak leaf tea for coughs and colds (Hiller & Melzig, 2010). In Indian traditions recorded by Jain and DeFilipps, a leaf decoction was given for fever and mild throat complaints (1991), while in Chinese herbal compendia, the aerial parts (leaves and stems) were decocted to support the lungs in cough with thin sputum (Chinese Materia Medica, 1999). Wichtl lists the infusion for bronchial irritation and gentle diuresis (2004), and Daly and Bowen record its use as a poultice in the eastern Mediterranean (2016). All accounts consistently refer to the aerial parts—primarily the leaves, and less often the stems and young flowers—prepared as infusions, decoctions, or externally applied pastes.

A simple mild tea: measure 2 to 4 g of dried aerial parts (roughly a small handful of fresh leaves), add to a pot with 250 ml of cold water, bring to a simmer, and steep 10 to 15 minutes; strain and sip 1 cup 1 to 2 times daily. Use a gentler infusion if the taste is harsh. Safety note: as an old-world herb with mild actions, henbit is not recommended during pregnancy or in those with allergies to Lamiaceae; stop if irritation occurs. Because published sources emphasize mild, supportive use, avoid strong decoctions and high doses.

Well-documented constituents include flavonoids such as quercetin and luteolin derivatives, phenolic acids (rosmarinic and caffeic), and iridoid glycosides like aucubin; these are consistent across chemotaxonomic surveys of Lamium species (Blunt et al., 2020). These compounds plausibly account for the plant’s mild astringent and bronchodilatory activity described in folk practice.

Modern relevance: recent biochemical profiling and pharmacological studies on related Lamium species continue to affirm its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant potential, and the dried herb remains available through specialty herbal outlets supporting traditional use.

General Uses Top

Suggest a correction!

Common products:
- Fresh young shoots and leaves, marketed as a wild edible salad green.
- Forage (grazing animal feed) for livestock, especially sheep, goats and cattle.

Food and beverages (non-medicinal):
- Consumed raw in salads; also cooked as a potherb and added to soups, stews and omelettes.
- Harvested in early spring before flowering for use in home and specialty cuisines.

Properties relevant to use:
- Leaves contain a high moisture content and low cellulose/lignin, giving a tender texture suitable for raw consumption.
- Mild, neutral flavor; low oxalate levels compared with many other leafy weeds.

Sustainability and sourcing:
- Widely distributed in temperate regions, often occurring as a common weed; its abundance reduces risk of overharvest.
- Foraged sustainably from lawns, fields and disturbed sites; can be cultivated as a low‑maintenance cover crop for early‑season soil stabilization.
