Common products:
- Steam‑distilled essential oil from the aerial parts (leaves, stems, flowers) of Glechoma grandis.

Industrial and craft applications:
- The oil, rich in monoterpene ketones, is incorporated into fragrance formulations to provide a fresh, minty note. It is also employed in cosmetic products such as soaps, shampoos, and lotions where a characteristic minty aroma is desired. In addition, the oil is used as a natural flavoring in low‑level food applications, including confectionery, chewing‑gum bases, and certain beverage blends, where its distinctive profile contributes to a mint‑like taste.

Properties relevant to use:
- The essential oil is dominated by pulegone and menthone, together constituting the majority of the volatile fraction, with limonene and 1,8‑cineole as secondary constituents. The high proportion of pulegone (a monoterpene ketone) imparts a strong mint‑like odor and a relatively high vapor pressure, which facilitates dispersion in perfume bases. Typical physical characteristics reported for the oil include a density of 0.90–0.92 g mL⁻¹ at 20 °C, a refractive index of 1.470–1.480, and an optical rotation of +10° to +15°. Minor sesquiterpenes present in the oil add depth and improve fixative properties.

Standards and regulation:
- Use of Glechoma grandis essential oil in fragrances is governed by the International Fragrance Association (IFRA) standards, which set maximum permissible levels for key constituents such as pulegone and menthone to ensure consumer safety. In Japan, the oil’s quality for cosmetic and food applications is regulated by the Japanese Cosmetic Ingredients (JCI) standard and the Japanese Food Sanitation Law, which require identity verification, assay of the main volatile constituents, and limits on residual solvents. Internationally, the oil conforms to ISO 11014‑1 (Essential oils – General requirements) and ISO 3215 (Oil of Peppermint), which provide guidelines for composition and physicochemical parameters.

Sustainability and sourcing:
- Glechoma grandis is a perennial herb native to East Asia and is cultivated on small‑scale farms, primarily in Hokkaido and other temperate regions of Japan and Korea. Harvest of the aerial parts occurs during early flowering to maximize oil yield, and the plant’s ability to regenerate from underground stolons allows sustainable cutting without depleting wild populations. Current production volumes are modest, supporting a niche market for natural fragrance materials and flavoring agents.
