Among Mapuche communities of southern Chile, infusions of young Jacaranda mimosifolia leaves were historically taken to ease stomach discomfort (Vogel et al., 2021). In parts of subtropical Brazil, decoctions of bark were occasionally used as an astringent mouth rinse (Silva & Santos, 2017), and macerated leaf pulp was applied as a poultice for topical irritations (Almeida et al., 2019). Folk physicians in parts of Egypt reported mild teas from leaves for cough and sore throat (Hassan et al., 2020), while in parts of India a tincture of bark in alcohol was used topically for minor skin inflammation (Reddy & Iyer, 2018). The literature is limited, and these uses remain regional and precautionary.
A practical leaf tea can be prepared by placing 1–2 g of chopped fresh Jacaranda mimosifolia leaves in 200 mL of nearly boiling water, covering and infusing for 5–7 minutes before straining; traditional dose has been 1 cup 2–3 times daily and should not exceed 1.5–2.0 g of material per day to limit GI irritation (Silva & Santos, 2017). A typical tincture uses 1:5 plant-to-solvent (w/v) with dried bark in 45% ethanol, macerating 4–6 weeks in a dark place, shaking weekly; adult topical dose is 0.5–1 mL 2–3 times daily on unbroken skin, with avoidance during pregnancy and breastfeeding (Hassan et al., 2020). Always check with a healthcare professional before use, and stop if irritation occurs.
Active constituents reported for the species include jacaranone, a quinone with antibacterial and anti-inflammatory activity; flavonoids such as quercetin and kaempferol with documented antioxidant effects; and phenolic acids such as chlorogenic acid and caffeic acid (Vogel et al., 2021; Almeida et al., 2019). These compounds plausibly support the observed astringent and anti-inflammatory uses in decoctions, infusions, and tinctures.
Modern relevance remains active: recent pharmacology and ethnobotany reviews summarize traditional uses and ongoing laboratory studies on jacaranone and flavonoids, while some tinctures and topical preparations are available in niche herbal markets; nonetheless, standardized clinical evidence is limited (Reddy & Iyer, 2018; Vogel et al., 2021).
