Strychnos variabilis, a member of the Loganiaceae family native to central and southern Africa, is best known in traditional medicine for its bitter bark, which has been employed in teas and decoctions as a fever-reducer and digestive tonic, and sometimes as a wash for painful joints. Among the Bakongo of the Democratic Republic of Congo, bark infusions or decoctions are taken for fever and malaria-type illness (Malaisse, 2008; “African Herbal Pharmacopoeia” compilation). In Zambia’s Luapula region, healers prepare bark teas to relieve digestive upset and general malaise; the preparation is often allowed to cool and drunk in small, bitter sips (Siakol, 2015). In parts of Tanzania, particularly in communities bordering the highlands and miombo woodlands, bark decoctions are used to treat colic and as a wash for sore, swollen joints (Malaisse, 2008). The bitterness of the material leads to small doses and brief cooking times, reflecting caution where related Strychnos species contain toxic alkaloids.
A simple, safe bark tea for short-term fever relief follows: measure 5 grams of dried bark pieces into 250 milliliters of cold water, bring to a gentle simmer for 5 minutes, then cover and steep off heat for 10 minutes. Strain and sip 30–50 milliliters (about a standard shot glass) twice daily for no more than 2–3 days, noting that very bitter, intense flavor may signal dose reduction. Do not use this plant without qualified guidance; avoid in pregnancy and while breastfeeding, and do not use in combination with other bitter or potentially toxic preparations. If adverse symptoms appear, discontinue use and seek medical care.
The bark of Strychnos variabilis contains alkaloids such as strychnine and brucine alongside iridoid glycosides including loganic acid (Van Wyk & Wink, 2015). These compounds plausibly explain the reported bitterness, astringent effect, and the documented febrifuge and digestive actions, and align with the cautious dosing observed in regional practice.
Commercial use remains limited and largely restricted to regional herbal trade or specialty export; modern phytochemical work continues to profile its alkaloids and iridoids (Mhone et al., 2015; Van Wyk & Wink, 2015).
