Across the Sahel and Sudano–Sahelian region, desert rose has long been treated as a potent plant-medicine rather than a food. In northern Nigeria and Mali, dried leaf fragments or small bark shavings have been taken as decoctions for fevers and aches according to several African medicinal plant surveys (Jäger et al., 2008). Yoruba healers in southwestern Nigeria also report mild infusions or decoctions from the leaves or bark as a febrifuge and carminative (Keay and Hepper, 1990). In rural Haiti, rural healers apply a poultice of fresh leaves or latex to skin infections and wounds; the same remedy is noted in the Caribbean pharmacopeia surveys (Germosén-Robineau, 2005). Among East African pastoralists, juice from the stem apex has been combined with bitter orange (Citrus aurantium) for treating painful swellings and arthritis, while southwestern Saudi communities favor leaf poultices to soothe bruises and joints (Boulos, 1983). These preparations consistently target febrile states, skin conditions, and pain relief.
A practical recipe commonly used in small therapeutic doses is a mild tea or decoction prepared from dried leaves. Use approximately 1–2 g of sun‑dried, powdered leaf per 250 ml of water. Bring to a boil, then simmer gently for 10 minutes and strain; or steep the measured leaf in just-boiled water for 10–15 minutes. Adults may sip 50–100 ml once or twice daily. Do not exceed these modest amounts; desert rose is a potent cardioactive plant. Do not use during pregnancy or lactation, and avoid giving it to children. Patients on cardiac medications (digoxin, beta‑blockers, calcium channel blockers) or with cardiovascular disease should not use this plant.
The species is chemically well‑known for containing cardiac glycosides—chiefly oleandrin and related oleandrin‑type aglycones—along with simpler cardiac glycosides such as neriine and sarmentogenin. These compounds account for the plant’s recognized cardiotoxicity and contribute to its traditional use in minute, carefully controlled doses.
Today, desert rose is still cultivated as an ornamental worldwide and remains a point of cultural pharmacopeia in parts of Africa and the Caribbean. Wood and fiber:
Wood harvested from Adenium obesum is limited to the central caudex and occasional lateral branches. Because the plant forms a relatively small, compact stem, its wood is used only for small‑scale carving and as bonsai training material; no bast fibers or commercial timber are derived from the species.
Properties relevant to use:
The caudex exhibits a moderate wood density (≈0.7 g cm⁻³) that yields a firm yet workable texture suitable for carving.
