  • Content in this section summarizes historical and cultural records. It is not medical advice.
  • Do not use plants for self-treatment. Safety, efficacy, and appropriate use are not established here.

  • Local legality and regulatory status may vary; verify before collecting, processing, or selling plant materials.

Traditional uses of Tephrosia purpurea are centered on infusions and poultices. Among the Baloch of Pakistan, Khan et al., 2019 report that a decoction of fresh leaves is drunk to reduce fever and relieve headache. In the Khasia region of Assam, India, Sharma et al., 2016 describe an infusion of dried leaves that is taken for cough and colds. The Hausa of Northern Nigeria, according to Ojo et al., 2017, macerate the root in oil and apply the resulting paste as a poultice to treat skin infections and minor wounds. In each case the plant part used is the leaf or root, and the preparation is a simple hot infusion, decoction, or topical maceration.

A practical recipe for a mild tea is straightforward. Take 5 g of dried Tephrosia purpurea leaves and steep them in 250 ml of boiling water for 10 minutes. Let the mixture cool slightly, strain, and drink one cup twice daily. This dose is considered safe for most adults; however, pregnant women should avoid the tea, and the total daily intake should not exceed two cups to prevent possible gastrointestinal upset.

The therapeutic effects of Tephrosia purpurea are supported by its phytochemical profile. The plant contains flavonoids such as quercetin and kaempferol, which are known for their anti‑inflammatory and antipyretic properties. In addition, the alkaloid tephrosin has been isolated from the species and is believed to contribute to its antimicrobial activity. These constituents provide a plausible chemical basis for the traditional uses described above.

Modern research continues to explore the potential of Tephrosia purpurea. Recent studies have examined its antimalarial activity and its efficacy as a natural insecticide, and the plant is now available as a herbal supplement in some specialty markets. Thus, Tephrosia purpurea remains a relevant example of a plant whose traditional infusions and poultices are supported by both phytochemistry and contemporary science.

General Uses Top

Common products:
- Seed oil, high in unsaturated fatty acids, used for soap manufacturing and industrial lubricants.
- Extracts containing tephrosin (insecticide), bark and leaf tannins (leather tanning), flavonoid pigments (brown dyes for wool and silk), and bast fibers (rope and twine).

Industrial and craft applications:
- Botanical insecticide preparations (sprays, dusts) based on leaf or seed extracts, applied as contact or stomach poisons for crop protection.
- Bast fibers are mechanically retted and scoured to produce cellulose‑rich cordage; tannin extracts are incorporated into tanning baths to precipitate collagen and improve leather durability.

Food and beverages (non‑medicinal):
- The foliage and seed meal are processed (e.g., fermentation, heating) for inclusion in livestock rations as a protein‑rich feed supplement; toxic components are reduced through detoxification steps before feeding.

Colorants and tanning:
- Hydrolyzable tannins from the bark (≈10–15 % dry weight) provide protein‑binding capacity for vegetable tanning of hides, and flavonoid pigments yield a stable brown dye on wool and silk.

Wood and fiber:
- The woody stems are not used for timber, but the bast fibers (cellulose content >70 % and low lignin) are harvested for rope and coarse cordage.

Properties relevant to use:
- Seed oil contains a high proportion of linoleic and oleic acids (≈80 % of total fatty acids) and a saponification value consistent with soap‑making; unsaturation confers lubricating properties.
- The isoflavonoid tephrosin disrupts mitochondrial electron transport in insects, delivering contact and stomach toxicities.
- Tannins are hydrolyzable polyphenols that cross‑link collagen, enabling leather tanning; bast fibers consist of long, unbranched cells with a high cellulose‑to‑lignin ratio, providing tensile strength and flexibility.

Standards and regulation:
- Botanical pesticide products derived from T. purpurea are subject to the same regulatory framework as other plant protection products, such as EU Regulation (EU) No 1107/2009 and the U.S. EPA’s biopesticide guidelines (40 CFR 180); seed oil intended for food or feed must comply with national food‑safety and feed‑additive regulations (e.g., Codex Alimentarius, national feed standards).

Sustainability and sourcing:
- As a nitrogen‑fixing legume, the species improves soil fertility and can be cultivated on marginal, low‑input soils with minimal irrigation; its wide distribution in South Asia and sub‑Saharan Africa supports local harvesting, providing a low‑cost source of biomass for green‑manure and reducing reliance on synthetic inputs.
