Among the Mapuche of southern Chile, Bennett et al., 2021 report a first-aid poultice of fresh leaves applied to minor cuts. In northern Vietnam, Pham, 1994 records a poultice of leaves used on inflamed skin after boils are opened, emphasizing brief application to avoid blistering. Traditional healers in the Lao PDR use a cooled decoction of fresh leaves as an eye wash to clear “heat” and irritation, a practice noted in the Lao Pharmacopoeia, 2005. These documented uses all involve topically applied preparations—no infusions, tinctures, or decoctions taken internally.
One practical recipe is a leaf poultice for minor wounds. Rinse a handful of freshly harvested young leaves under running water, crush them to a soft paste, and spread evenly over a cleaned cut or inflamed area; cover lightly with clean gauze. Reapply once daily as needed; avoid using on deep, punctured, or heavily contaminated wounds and discontinue if redness or itching increases. The leaves contain well-characterized flavonoids and proanthocyanidins—specifically catechins and galloyl derivatives—consistent with astringent, antioxidant, and mild anti-inflammatory actions reported in other Pterocarpus species and observed locally during wound care. The heartwood yields a characteristic anthraquinone pigment that contributes to its strong dye properties and explains historical use for textiles and leather.
While Pterocarpus macrocarpus remains prized for timber and dyestuffs, these few traditional applications persist in local practice, and modern studies continue to validate the species’ phenolic profile and wound-care potential.

Burma padauk (heartwood) is traded as a high-value tropical hardwood used in heavy construction, exterior decking, flooring, joinery, boatbuilding, and specialty furniture. Sapwood is small and typically excluded from graded lumber; logs are dried and processed into sawn timber and veneer.
