General Uses Top
Suggest a correction!Common products:
The principal commercial product is sawn timber; minor products include a red gum/resin (known as “kino”) exuded from the bark and heartwood tannins.
Wood and fiber:
Timber is traded as “Muninga,” “Mukwa,” and related names. It is used for furniture, flooring, interior joinery, and utility timbers including poles, posts, and railway sleepers. The wood is valued for its high natural oil content, which contributes to dimensional stability, durability, and a lustrous finish. It readily accepts finishes and polishes, and is a favorite for carving and turning.
Colorants and tanning:
The red gum/resin is used locally as a brownish-red natural dye and as a leather-tanning material. The bark and heartwood are rich in tannins, providing dye and tanning functionality.
Industrial and craft applications:
The wood is selected for applications requiring durability and good finishing, such as furniture, flooring, interior joinery, and poles. It is also used for carving and turned objects where a rich color and natural sheen are desirable. The red gum is employed as a natural adhesive in woodwork and as a small-scale colorant.
Properties relevant to use:
Timber density is relatively high; the wood is naturally oily, conferring dimensional stability, durability, and a lustrous surface that takes finish well. The resin/gum is water-soluble and can act as an adhesive; the heartwood/bark are tannin-rich, enabling dyeing and leather processing.
Sustainability and sourcing:
The species is widely distributed in southern and eastern Africa but is not globally abundant; resource assessments and export controls vary by country. Monitoring supply and ensuring legal, sustainable harvest are recommended.
