Genus Description
Suggest a correction!Entada (Adans.) is a genus of twining lianas and scandent shrubs in Fabaceae (subfamily Detarioideae, Mimoseae sensu LPWG, 2017). About 28–29 species are accepted (POWO, 2024; WFO, 2024), with a pantropical distribution in West and East Africa, Madagascar, the Mascarenes, tropical Asia to northern Australia, and the Pacific. The type species is Entada scandens sensu Linnaeus, now treated as a synonym of Entada rheedii (ILDIS, 2024), so most treatments list E. rheedii as the type for practical circumscription.
Plants are woody climbers with once- or twice-pinnate, feathery leaves; axillary inflorescences form dense spikes or racemes bearing numerous minute yellowish to whitish flowers with five sepals and petals and numerous exserted stamens. The ovary is superior, unilocular, with marginal placentation, and the fruit is a long, flattened loment with transverse partitions; segments are typically winged and buoyant, facilitating long-distance oceanic dispersal (African Plant Database, 2024; LPWG, 2017). Seed and cotyledon morphology are described as modified (Lemmel et al., 2019), aligning with the mimosoid style.
Centers of diversity include Madagascar and tropical Asia–Australia, with several regional endemics (e.g., Australian taxa; Australian Plant Census, 2023). Species occur from sea level to around 600 m in coastal dunes, riverine forest, mangrove margins, and lowland rainforests (Flora of Tropical East Africa, 1959; POWO, 2024). Detailed pollination ecology is under-documented; limited observations suggest visitation by diverse small insects (Verdcourt, 1979). Seed dispersal across oceans is well established (Gunn & Dennis, 1976).
Taxonomy is relatively stable at generic level, with Entada rheedii in broad usage for the widespread climbing “sea bean” and several synonymizations confirmed (ILDIS, 2024). Earlier species complexes (e.g., E. gigas and E. phaseoloides) are largely subsumed under E. rheedii in major treatments (African Plant Database, 2024). The subgeneric arrangement is not widely applied; molecular phylogenetics places Entada in the Mimoseae clade and suggests a need for finer-scale re-circumscription within a wider Entada sensu lato group (Jobson et al., 2023; Ringelberg et al., 2020). Chromosome counts remain inconsistently reported across taxa and are not firmly established.
Many species are cultivated as robust climbers, with seeds drifting in the oceanic “sea bean” trade; they can become weedy where introduced (POWO, 2024). Habitat loss and coastal degradation pose threats to several coastal taxa; ongoing floristic and phylogenetic revisions remain essential to refine species boundaries and conservation priorities.
