Common products:
Seeds and seed coat are processed as a non-edible surfactant (soap substitute) and laundry/handwashing agent, valued for saponin-derived foam and emulsifying properties. The bark yields bast fibers used locally for cordage, weaving, and rope.

Industrial and craft applications:
The seed’s high saponin content and fast-foaming kinetics underpin its use as a natural detergent and surfactant. Seed material is employed as a hair- and body-wash (solids or paste), while bark fibers, separated and twisted, are spun into cordage for nets and simple weaving. Seed testa and residual pulp function as low-cost surfactant additives in artisanal cleaning formulations.

Properties relevant to use:
Seeds contain dammarane-type triterpenoid saponins (e.g., rheediin, rheediinosides) responsible for surfactant behavior; aqueous extracts foam rapidly under agitation. The bast fibers consist of long, flexible bast bundles yielding tenacity and knot-holding strength suitable for cordage.
