Wisteria brachybotrys, also known as silky wisteria, is a flowering plant native to Japan. It is widely cultivated in its native country, with white flowered cultivars being more popular than pale violet ones. This species grows in mountain forests and woods and can reach heights of up to 19 meters. Its leaves are hairy and can grow up to 35 cm long, with up to 13 leaflets. The flowers, which bloom in late spring and early summer, are pale violet or white with a yellow blotch at the base. They are followed by green seedpods containing toxic seeds. Like other wisteria species, it requires support when grown as an ornamental and can be trained to grow on trees, walls, or pergolas. It is hardy in temperatures down to -20°C and needs a sheltered, moist environment. Several cultivars of Wisteria brachybotrys have been recognized with the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit.
