Piscidia piscipula, also known as the Florida fishpoison tree, Jamaican dogwood, or fishfuddle, is a medium-sized deciduous tree found in the Greater Antilles, southern Florida, and the coastal region of Panama and Mexico. Its name comes from the native Taino people who discovered that extracts from the tree could sedate fish, making them easier to catch. The tree has medicinal properties and is used as an analgesic and sedative. It grows in coastal zones and prefers well-drained sandy soils. The tree's leaves are pinnately compound and its flowers are white with a hint of red or pink. The tree's wood is resistant to decay and is used for outdoor purposes, while its extracts have been used in herbal medicine for treating pain and insomnia. The Florida fishpoison tree is also a larval host plant for several butterfly species.
