Derris elliptica is a leguminous plant found in Southeast Asia and the southwest Pacific islands. Its roots contain rotenone, a potent insecticide and fish poison. In the past, it was used as an organic insecticide to control pests on crops, but its extreme toxicity has been revealed through studies. Despite this, some native residents of Fiji and New Guinea still use it for fishing by crushing the roots and throwing them into the water to stun or kill fish. Derris is also a food source for certain species of Lepidopteran larvae. There are four known subspecies of Derris elliptica, including chittagongensis, elliptica, malacensis, and tonkinensis.
