Crotalaria retusa, also known as devil-bean or rattleweed, is a species of flowering plant in the legume family. It is native to tropical regions of Asia, Africa, and Australia, but has been introduced as a crop plant in many other areas. However, it has become a problematic weed in some places and is listed as a noxious weed in several US states and other countries. This annual plant is poisonous to livestock and can contaminate human food. It is also used as a fiber crop and for green manure, but its toxicity makes it a threat to animal and human health. The plant contains pyrrolizidine alkaloids, which are toxic to birds and large mammals. In Australia, horses are the only known animals to die from consuming this plant, with symptoms including weight loss, sleepiness, and depression. In the US, the seeds have been found to be poisonous to chickens.
