Pouteria obovata, also known as the northern yellow boxwood, is a tree in the Sapotaceae family found in Southeast Asia, Micronesia, and the Indian Ocean islands. It was first described by Robert Brown in 1810 and later renamed by Baehni in 1942. The leaves of this tree are oval-shaped and covered in fine hairs when young, but become smooth and shiny as they mature. It produces small greenish-white flowers in clusters, followed by round red or blue berries containing one to five yellow seeds. This tree can reach a height of 10 to 20 meters and is commonly used for turning and cabinet-making. It can be grown in well-drained areas with plenty of sunlight and is propagated by seed. There is some debate over its scientific name, with some arguing it should be called Planchonella obovata. Genetic analysis has shown that the material from Papua New Guinea is genetically isolated from the material found in Australia and Indonesia.
