General Uses Top

Suggest a correction!

Common products:
The species provides heavy, durable timber (sawn wood, roundwood) used in construction and general carpentry. Minor applications include poles, posts, and tool handles.

Industrial and craft applications:
The dense, straight-grained wood is suitable for flooring, decking, and turnery, and for sporting goods such as bats, handles, and mallets. Its natural resistance to wear and shock make it appropriate for high-friction components in furniture and tool-making.

Food and beverages (non-medicinal):
No established non-medicinal food or beverage uses are reported.

Colorants and tanning:
Heartwood and bark contain condensed tannins suitable for vegetable tanning of hides and skins. Extracts have been explored as natural brown dyes for protein fibers such as wool and silk, attributed to proanthocyanidin-type phenolics.

Wood and fiber:
Timber is classified as heavy hardwood with high density and strength, broadly similar to tropical members of Sapotaceae. The wood machines and finishes well for utility and craft purposes. Natural variability in grain and extractives can affect finishing; selections are made for uniformity in furniture and turning.

Fragrance and cosmetics:
No documented fragrance or cosmetic applications are reported.

Properties relevant to use:
As a dense, hardwood timber, it is valued for high strength, hardness, and durability. In tanning, condensed tannins confer high-affinity binding to collagen, producing firm leathers. In dyeing, polyphenolic extracts typically yield warm browns; color intensity depends on mordant choice and process pH, without speculative claims about performance.

Standards and regulation:
Timber grading and quality control follow regional softwood/hardwood standards (e.g., EN, JAS, or local grading rules) for moisture content, dimensional tolerances, and grading of appearance and structural use. For tanning, leather quality and safety follow international standards such as ISO/TC 120 leather standards.

Sustainability and sourcing:
The species occurs across Southeast Asia in disturbed and secondary forests and is used primarily in local markets. Regional forestry and trade regulations govern harvest; overharvesting risk in specific localities is a concern where demand exceeds local regeneration.
