Fouquieria splendens, commonly known as ocotillo, is a plant indigenous to the Sonoran Desert and Chihuahuan Desert and Colorado Desert in the Southwestern United States and northern Mexico. It appears to be an arrangement of large spiny dead sticks for much of the year, but with rainfall, the plant quickly becomes lush with small ovate leaves. It can grow to a height of 10 m (33 ft) and has bright crimson flowers that appear after rainfall in spring, summer, and occasionally fall. Ocotillo is used for fencing material, walking sticks, salads, tisanes, and medicinal purposes. There are three subspecies of ocotillo.
