In the Hubei region of China, the aerial parts of Patrinia scabiosifolia are traditionally prepared as a decoction of 15–30 g dried herb boiled in 500 ml water for 30 min to treat cough and sore throat (Wang et al., 2019). The decoction is taken warm three times daily, after meals, and is often sweetened with honey to ease the throat. In Jeju Island, Korea, healers collect the fresh roots, slice them, and simmer 10 g of root in 200 ml water for 15 min, consuming the decoction twice daily for stomach upset and dyspepsia (Lee et al., 2020). The root brew is also sometimes mixed with ginger to enhance its warming effect. Among the Ainu people of Hokkaido, Japan, the fresh leaves are mashed into a poultice and applied to the chest or forehead to lower fever; the same leaves are also steeped in hot water for a mild tea that is sipped to relieve colds (Matsunaga et al., 2018). The poultice is refreshed every few hours until the fever subsides, and the tea is usually taken twice a day.

Mild leaf tea: Place 2–3 g of dried Patrinia scabiosifolia leaves (or 4–5 g of fresh leaves) in a cup, pour 200 ml of just‑boiled water over them, cover, and let steep for 8–10 minutes. Strain and drink the infusion once, optionally sweetened. For stronger effect, a second infusion may be taken later in the day. Safety note: the herb is not recommended for pregnant women because animal studies suggest uterine stimulant activity; keep total daily intake below three cups. Any leftover tea can be refrigerated and used within 24 hours.

At least three classes of constituents have been consistently reported from Patrinia scabiosifolia: iridoid glycosides such as patrinoside and scabioside, flavonoids like luteolin‑7‑O‑glucoside and apigenin, and saponins bearing oleanolic acid aglycones (Zhang et al., 2020). Phenylpropanoids, especially caffeic acid derivatives, are also present in measurable amounts. These phytochemicals are known for anti‑inflammatory, antispasmodic, and antimicrobial actions, which align with the traditional uses as a cough‑relieving decoction, a stomach‑soothing infusion, and a fever‑reducing poultice.

Scientific interest remains high: recent in‑vitro studies confirm that the iridoid‑rich extract inhibits NF‑κB signaling and reduces bacterial growth of Staphylococcus aureus, while commercial tinctures and standardized extracts are now marketed in Japan as natural health products for cold relief (Kobayashi et al., 2022). Patrinia scabiosifolia extracts are also listed in the Chinese Pharmacopoeia as a standardized monograph, reflecting its transition from folk practice to regulated herbal medicine. In rural parts of China and Korea, elderly herbalists still prepare the leaf tea seasonally, indicating that the plant’s traditional role persists even as modern research explores its therapeutic potential.
